So I guess it makes sense that I start this blog by talking about how Custom Vinyl Records came to be.
In the beginning there was nothing, nothing at all on my daughter’s bedroom wall. It’s blank, bare, a tasteful yet boring off-white colour. She loves music and I wanted to find her something music related, relevant to her likes, which could be a cool thing for her to have on her bedroom wall for now and the years to come. She adores the song “Wanna be startin’ something” by Michael Jackson – it gets played on a constant loop when we’re in the car. Opinions of the man aside, I think it’s a great pop song so I wanted to maybe find some lyric artwork or similar that would look good in her room so I set about searching online. After sometime I couldn’t really find anything that was quite what I wanted and nothing really caught my eye, however during my search I saw a number of interesting products by some clearly very talented people which involved making very cool things out of old vinyl records. I noticed that people were able to shape, sculpt, paint and do all sorts of imaginative things with vinyl – check out “vinyl art” on sites like Etsy to get an idea of all the creative stuff that people are coming up with.
Anyway, it was from here that I got the inspiration for doing something a little different with old vinyl. I myself am a big vinyl collector and it occurred to me that if you have an old original LP which has seen better days, why not design artwork based on the albums songs onto the vinyl itself. So this is how it started, I set about investigating ways of designing and developing artwork on vinyl records, however at this point in time it was still very much with the intention of simply coming up with something cool for my daughter’s bedroom wall.
After some thought and experimentation with design, I started to give consideration to what songs/albums could work well. An albums track listing and song lyrics play a big part in bringing the artwork to life. Although it sounds obvious, the more interesting & descriptive a song’s lyrics, the more creative freedom I had with the artwork designs. I’m sorry to say that it was at this point that my daughter’s bedroom wall idea had become somewhat “shelved” (sorry baby, I promise to get back to your bedroom project soon!). Although it was still some way from being the finished item, what was created at that point in time was the first design of the Custom Vinyl Records portfolio. It wasn’t “Wanna be startin’ something” by Michael Jackson as originally planned but it was in fact another song from the iconic “Thriller” album – “Billie Jean” had just become Custom Vinyl Records first piece of vinyl artwork.
